Fearlessness is overrated. Let me explain. Since I was 4-feet-something with ringlets in my hair and velvet platform shoes on my feet, I have been plagued by bouts of anxiety. Sometimes it is so extreme that I just want to curl up in bed and hide under the covers – yes, this still happens in your 30s so if you were born after 1990, you have that to look forward to! Other times, it lingers in the background like a bad habit and you do everything you can to get through the day without it hovering over you like a dark cloud. That might sound like a melodramatic depiction, but I promise you, the sentiment is accurate!
Me and Ro under the bright lights of Houston. That light will never fade.
Oh Houston. What a roller coaster it has been. Since 2011, you have been our place of refuge, our home. I still remember the day we moved from New Orleans to the great state of Texas. It really doesn’t seem all that long ago. Notorious B.I.G. was playing in the background as we crossed the Atchafalaya bridge with a wish and prayer that we could make a life in H-Town. The first three months were a blur – coffeeshops and studying for the Texas Bar took up ALL our time but even with little time to explore, I knew this great city would become part of our fabric, part of our DNA.
FRIENDS. I know it has been a hot minute and I am so sorry for leaving you hanging. I think it’s only fair that I catch you up on what we have been up to during Summer Seventeen. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Summer Sixteen – Drake truly is a genius – but it was lit nonetheless. Read More
PITBULL. IS. COMING. I know – stop what you are doing right now and check his tour dates to see when he is coming to a city near you. I swear, seeing him perform live is a game changer. GAME. CHANGER. If you have been a dedicated reader of this blog since inception, you know that my unabashed love for Pitbull is long-standing and widely known. Ain’t no shame in my game.
As I mentioned here, one must mentally and physically prepare for the epic dance party that is a Pitbull concert. This means building up your endurance. It really isn’t as scary as it sounds, I swear. And, BONUS, you can rock some Pitbull swag while doing it – as evident below.
SO sorry for being MIA friends but I had to survive tax season before getting back to all things shiny and pretty. I haven’t really been feeling myself lately as I have been rocking my hair on top of my head for the last month and successfully hiding behind my larger than life Tory Burch tortoiseshell frames. I do have my eye on this Tom Ford pair so I can switch up my game a bit AND look fresh to death while inputting numbers into Excel. Priorities. I have learned many things this past month – I know an embarrassing amount about pivot tables and Excel formulas, hair really does look healthier when you stop using 59 irons to style it in the morning, dry shampoo has LEGIT saved my life and daylight savings time is the absolute WORST. I have also really, REALLY missed the outdoors. Being trapped behind a computer screen since the start of 2017 will do that to you.
This time of year always makes me reminisce about the origins of ROMYNA – for those of you who are first-time readers, this is the badass moniker that friends and family use when referring to me and Ro. If you don’t know, now you know. It all started in the reading room of Tulane’s law library in 2008. I spotted HIG (that was my nickname for him, which stands for Hot Indian Guy – subtlety has never really been my strong suit and I call ‘em like I see ‘em) in the library, furiously studying and pounding energy drinks in his go-to basketball shorts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tee. Two days later, someone introduced us at a law school sponsored event and that, my friends, was the jump off.
In high school, I was a badass. I was a member of the winter conditioning team, which consisted of long runs outside, braving both snow and rocky terrain. I know what y’all are thinking – that is absolutely not something I would voluntarily sign up for. Did I forgot to mention that we got a free hoodie? See, it’s all making sense now.
Since those cold blustery days in Groton, Massachusetts, I have tried countless workout plans. Billy Blanks and I were besties, I toyed with becoming a Zumba instructor for a hot minute and I once almost died at hot yoga class. True story. Since I can remember, I have been on the search for a workout that I loved and could motivate myself to get up and do. Consistently. The pull of the couch, fuzzy blankets and cheese fries is STRONG y’all. As you know, a good beat and a killer wardrobe are two of my greatest inspirations. Enter Spotify and Nike.
